Meet Ms. Hathaway!

What made you decide to join the Crew at Alma?
Alma’s commitment to equity is something that is very important to me. I was also so impressed with the vibe in the building when I came in to interview—everyone from staff to scholars was so warm and welcoming !

What do you hope to contribute to Alma?
I hope to bring my passion for the arts.

What teacher made a difference in your life, and how?
My high school theatre director, Mr. Silva, made a huge impact on me. He was the kid of teacher that you only see in movies or on TV, the one who genuinely cares about his students and takes the time and effort to really connect at a personal level. High school was a very chaotic time for me but Mr. Silva was a huge support, he showed me that being true to myself was the most important thing I could do, and allowed me the space to do that.

Why did you become involved in education?
I have always been interested in education, one of my first jobs was as a day counselor at Battleship Cove. We spent the summer doing arts and crafts, exploring WWII history, and learning about local sea life. But above everything, I got to know my campers and building those connections with scholars is my favorite part of teaching now.

Where did you go to college or post-secondary school and what did you like about it?
The Rhode Island School of Design -- I loved being in such a creative environment. I was completely immersed in the arts and constantly found myself inspired by my professors and fellow students.

What is your favorite food?
That is really tough but if I absolutely have to only pick one thing, it would be noodles: pasta, ramen, pad Thai are all favorites.

What is your favorite book?
A recent favorite is The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix.
