Meet Mr. Herndon!

What made you decide to join the Crew at Alma?
After I decided I did not want to work in academia, I looked for other teaching opportunities. The opportunity at Alma immediately grabbed my attention, mainly because I myself attended a K-8 charter school, and much of my love of learning began in that nurturing academic environment. I hope to instill that same passion for education in Alma's students.

What do you hope to contribute to Alma?
I want to be a resource not just for Alma's students, but for other educators, faculty, and staff. I believe deeply in the value of collaboration, and I am ready to help whomever and however I can.

What teacher made a difference in your life, and how?
My 7th-grade ELA teacher, Mr. Packard. Outside of teaching, he pursued creative endeavors like writing fiction. His passion for writing was palpable in the classroom, inspiring similar feelings in his students. As a student, I was inspired by his love of literature. Today, I am inspired by his ability to balance teaching and creative pursuits.

Why did you become involved in education?
I originally began teaching as part of my grad school TA duties. I realized that I love teaching, but don't much care for academia!

Where did you go to college or post-secondary school and what did you like about it?
Undergraduate: William and Mary / Graduate: Temple University. I liked the small class sizes and deep relationships with professors.
