Meet Ms. Amaral!

What made you decide to join the Crew at Alma?
I decided to join the Crew at Alma because I deeply connect with Alma’s mission of ensuring all children, regardless of background, have access to an excellent education. Having grown up in New Bedford and now raising my own children here, I wanted to be part of a team that is actively building a strong, supportive community for scholars and families. I’m inspired by Alma’s focus on collaboration, high expectations, and character development, and I’m excited to contribute my experience in child development and classroom support to help every scholar succeed.

What do you hope to contribute to Alma?
I hope to contribute a calm and supportive presence that helps scholars feel safe, understood, and capable of meeting high expectations. I want to use my experience working with children who have diverse behavioral and developmental needs to provide consistent strategies that support both scholars and teachers in the classroom. My goal is to help scholars build positive coping skills, strengthen relationships, and create an environment where they can focus on learning and growing as part of the Alma community.

What teacher made a difference in your life, and how?
While it wasn’t a teacher, my elementary school principal, Mr. Sean Riley, made a lasting impact on my life. He greeted every student with kindness and compassion, always starting our days with a smile and making each of us feel seen and valued. That simple daily gesture taught me how powerful it can be to make children feel welcomed and supported. I still keep in touch with him today, as my son now attends baseball lessons at his indoor batting facility, and his example continues to inspire how I approach working with children.

Why did you become involved in education?
I became involved in education because I’ve always been passionate about supporting children’s growth and helping them reach their full potential. My experience working in daycare gave me the chance to see firsthand how much of a difference patience, structure, and encouragement can make in a child’s life—especially for those who need extra support. Being part of their progress, both academically and emotionally, is incredibly rewarding and inspired me to continue working in education in a role where I can make an even greater impact.

Where did you go to college or post-secondary school and what did you like about it?
I attended Fisher College, where I completed a course in Child Growth and Development and earned a 4.0 GPA. This course gave me a strong foundation in understanding children’s developmental milestones and needs, which I’ve applied throughout my work supporting children in classroom settings.

What I liked most about my college experience at Fisher was the flexibility of taking the course online. It allowed me to balance my responsibilities as a mom while continuing my education, so I could still be present for important moments like my children’s baseball tournaments and dance competitions. That balance made it possible for me to grow professionally without missing out on family life.
